Setting the timing.

Well, the manual says the recommended timing is 3mm. From what info I can find, you set this by using a dial indicator, zeroing it at TDC, then turning the engine back until the dial indicator drops 3mm, and that is where the timing mark should be set to. However, even with the new style timing plate, I can only get about 2.5mm.

Is there a different way I should be setting the timing on this engine?

Thanks.

Is the timing plate you have like 2 large slots ?

Yes, I have the old one where there are 4 slots (there is a division between the screws), and the new one (mounted to the engine) that is just two large slots, two screws per slot.

Perhaps is the answer removing two of the screws, leaving only 1 per slot? Just thought of this now.
